MSI announced the Wind subnotebook, in two version with a 8.9 and 10 inch screen with LED backlighting and 1024x600 resolution, Intel Atom processor and 1GB RAM. The most interesting feature is definetly the 80GB hard disk! The subnotebook will be sold with Windows XP, pricing not clear yet. See also here.
Just looking at the news, to date MSI Wind seems to be the thoughest competitor for the EEE PC 900 and the recently announced 10-inch model.

After the announced EEE PC 900 with a 8.9 inch screen, Asus announced the launch of an EEE PC with a 10 inch screen, this is actually the maximum screen size foreseen for the EEE PC!

EEE PC Competition - Gigabyte M912 in June
After the Asus announcement of an EEE PC with Intel Atom CPU, also Gigabyte announced a cheap subnotebook, the model M912 with availability in June this year with the same CPU. According to the source the subnotebook is equipped with a 8.9 inch panel and possibly Bluetooth. Price and OS are not disclosed yet.

Not possible to deny: Asus EEE PC is the most discussed laptop in the past year. This is of course because of the revolutionary price for the micro laptop format.

EEE PC Mods - Replace CPU with a Pentium M
It is possible to replace the EEE PC's Celeron-M CPU with a slightly more performant Pentium-M, both from the ULV (Ultra Low Voltage) series.
It requires some fine soldering work and doesn't costs too much, however you void the guarrantee and a lot can go wrong.
You won't notice the performance improvement. It is a nice electronics excercise however it doesn't pay back in term of performance.
